Cunren Liang is currently an Assistant Professor at School of Earth and Space Sciences, Peking University. Previously, he was a Staff Scientist at California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, California (2018-2021). Prior to joining Caltech, he was a NASA Postdoctoral Program Fellow at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) also in Pasadena (2015-2018). He received the B.S. degree from Shandong University of Science and Technology in 2008, and the Ph.D. degree from Peking University in 2014.

Cunren Liang’s research interests primarily include Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) techniques, microwave scattering mechanisms, and their remote sensing applications. He currently works on the theory and technical development of Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR), as well as its geodetic and geophysical applications, with a particular focus on L-band as we enter the golden age of L-band satellite SAR missions.

He is currently in the Calibration/Validation and Science Team (CVST) for JAXA’s L-band SAR mission ALOS-4. Previously, he was involved in the Science Team projects for NASA’s dual L/S-band mission NISAR. He was a member of the JPL/Caltech ARIA team and worked on a number of NASA projects. He developed algorithms and software for processing multi-mode SAR data acquired by the L-band ALOS-2/4 satellites. He also developed techniques to correct for InSAR ionospheric effects for data acquired in different modes and at different wavelengths. He contributed a number of modules to the InSAR software package ISCE. He received the Best Paper Award for Young Scientist at ESA-NRSCC Symposium (2010 and 2012), NASA Postdoctoral Program Fellowship (2014), NASA Group Achievement Award (2016) and JPL Outstanding Postdoctoral Research Award (2017).
